Reserved Senior Parking – Hooray

Seniors in Montclair are grateful to Council Member Peter Yacobellis for implementing a State Law allowing for reserved Seniors-Only parking spaces in our business districts.

Montclair Council Member Yacobellis announced that the first two Reserved for Seniors parking signs have been mounted in two locations in the business district and assured us that more signs are to follow. Seniors parking in these spaces do not need to display handicapped parking badges. State legislation authorizing reserved senior parking dates back to 2017 when a delegation from the SCAC which included Penny Carey and Ann Lippel testified at the Statehouse to advocate for senior-friendly policy throughout the state. The bill allowing municipalities to reserve senior-parking passed both Houses and was signed by then Gov. Christie in that same term, but no action was taken locally in spite of several reminders from the Montclair Senior Citizens Advisory Committee (SCAC).  After the mass resignations of SCAC members in 2021, mGAP renewed these requests with Council Member Yacobellis.
