Montclair Gateway to Aging in Place (mGAP) announced the winners of the organization’s Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Design Competition on Sunday, November 5, at the Montclair Women’s Club. New Jersey Assemblywoman Britnee Timberlake, sponsor of the statewide ADU-authorizing legislation (NJ A3584), addressed the gathering to boost support for the bill currently pending in the New Jersey State Legislature.
This past summer, mGAP was honored to receive two awards: one from the Partners for Health Foundation and another from AARP’s Community Challenge Grant. Funding from both grants enabled mGAP to conduct the design competition with the goal of addressing the housing challenge for seniors who want to age in place. Innovative Accessory Dwelling Units can create new rental income on existing single-family plots while offering solutions for increasing density in first ring suburbs that have the least impact on streetscape and infrastructure.
“The ceremony was a showcase of the imaginative ADU renderings within a real Montclair property survey,” said Ann Lippel, mGAP president. “The award-winning designs will demonstrate to residents and town planners that ADU construction is a path to better housing options for older residents as well as other citizens. The designs will be utilized as proof of concept and to generate further dialogue within Suburban Essex toward revisiting existing zoning constraints.”
