George Frole, Tech Guru at mGAP
As the Tech Guru at Montclair Gateway to Aging in Place (mGAP), I spend a lot of time helping seniors get comfortable with smartwatches, smartphones, and the latest tech tools. But one of the most useful pieces of knowledge I’ve picked up over the years isn’t about apps or devices, it’s about how to travel into and around New York City without overpaying (aka Senior Discounts)
Living in New Jersey and commuting into the city regularly for meetings, social events, and family time (visiting daughters), I’ve learned the ins and outs of getting senior discounts on NJ Transit, the MTA subway and bus system, Metro-North, LIRR, and even the NYC Ferry. It’s a little bit paperwork, a little bit patience—but once you’ve got it down, the savings are real and the access is empowering.
Here’s how I did it—and how you can too.
🚌 NJ TRANSIT: Reduced-Fare Program (Seniors 62+)
Who qualifies?
- New jersey residents age 62 or older
How to apply:
- Request a Reduced-Fare ID card:
- Complete online application: https://reducedfare.njtransit.com
- Download the NJTransit app on phone and enter your demographics/profile
- Prove age: bring government ID (driver’s license, passport, birth certificate, or Medicare card) with DOB as you travel (as proof of age)
How it works:
- Once approved, simply select “Senior/Disabled” fare at ticket machines or select Senior Discount option on NJTransit app. I think the app is the easiest. Last week I took the NJT train from Trenton to Secaucus for only $8.75. Normally that’s a $20 one way cost.
🚇 MTA (NYC Subway, Buses, Express Buses)
Eligibility:
- 65 and older
What you get:
- Subway, Staten Island Railway & local buses: 50% off ($1.45 vs. $2.90).
- Express buses: $3.50 during off‑peak hours (peak remains $7 base fare)
How to enroll:
- Apply through MTA for a Reduced-Fare MetroCard (photo‑ID).
- Bring proof of age (Medicare Card or driver license or passport) to any one of several locations (https://www.mta.info/contact-us/customer-service-centers). It took me 10 minutes at the Barkley Center Station (Brooklyn) to get my new OMNY card. I immediately loaded my card with $20. Then jumped on the D train back to Manhattan for only $1.45.
Using it:
- Use your Reduced-Fare MetroCard on subways and buses; for express buses carry it plus ID.
- When I got home, I set up an online account using my new OMNY account code (back of card) and plan to load money going forward (online), instead of using the subway kiosks.
🚉 Metro‑North & LIRR (Railroads)
Who qualifies:
- Riders 65+
What’s available:
- 50% off one‑way fares, excluding peak-direction trains during 6-10 AM weekdays.
- 10‑Trip Reduced Fare tickets valid 60 days, shareable among eligible riders (not valid inbound peak)
- CityTicket: $5 off-peak within NYC, $7 peak; can buy onboard at Mets‑Willets Point or on Metro‑North if eligible
How to get it:
- Just board with proper ID and ask conductor for reduced fare-on‑board purchase acceptable .
- Or buy multiple‑ride tickets at ticket offices, machines, or via TrainTime app.
⛴️ NYC Ferry (All Routes)
Who qualifies:
- Seniors aged 65+
Discount details:
- One-way reduced fare is currently $1.45 (down from standard $4.00-4.50) .
How to enroll:
- Apply online, in person, or by mail, submitting proof of age (government ID, Medicare card, etc.) ferry.nyc+1ferry.nyc+1.
- Application processing takes up to 30 days.
- Once approved, you’ll see reduced‑fare tickets in the NYC Ferry app and can buy in person at Pier 11 (8 AM-7 PM)
Using it:
- Purchase a $1.45 ticket directly—it’s a stand-alone system, not MetroCard‑linked.
- Tickets are valid for 90 days and include 120‑minute transfers within Ferry network mta.info+2ferry.nyc+2en.wikipedia.org+2ferry.nyc.
📌 Tips for Smooth Sailing
- Carry valid ID and/or your Reduced-Fare card at all times; proof may be requested.
- Know peak vs off-peak rules (e.g., peak LIRR inbound morning not eligible).
- Explore CityTicket for intra‑NYC trips even on weekends—huge savings.
- For NJ Transit and Metro‑North/LIRR, multi‑ride tickets like 10‑Trips or CityTickets can offer extra value.
- Apply early for NYC Ferry—processing may take the full 30 days.
