Many older adults think New Jersey offers only a few programs for seniors. The truth is, the state provides dozens of free or low-cost services designed to help people remain healthy, independent, and living in their own homes.
The challenge is not that these programs don’t exist. The challenge is knowing where to find them.
The New Jersey Division of Aging Services, part of the Department of Human Services, serves as the state’s central resource for older adults, caregivers, and families. Whether you need help understanding Medicare, lowering prescription costs, finding transportation, or caring for a loved one, chances are there is a program available.
Some of the most valuable services include:
• Medicare Counseling (SHIP)
Receive free, unbiased counseling from trained volunteers who explain Medicare options, compare plans, and help avoid costly mistakes during enrollment.
• NJSave
One online application checks your eligibility for several money-saving programs, including prescription assistance, Medicare Savings Programs, utility assistance, and more.
• Prescription Drug Assistance
Programs such as PAAD and Senior Gold help eligible New Jersey residents reduce the cost of prescription medications.
• County Offices on Aging
Every New Jersey county has an Area Agency on Aging. These offices connect residents with transportation, meal programs, caregiver support, home services, wellness programs, and many other local resources.
• Caregiver Support
Family caregivers have access to respite programs, educational resources, counseling, and support services that help reduce the stress of caring for a loved one.
• Health and Wellness Programs
The Division sponsors programs that encourage healthy aging, exercise, fall prevention, chronic disease management, and lifelong learning.
• GetSetUp
New Jersey seniors have free access to hundreds of online classes covering technology, travel, fitness, hobbies, cooking, finances, and much more.
One of the Division’s primary goals is helping older adults remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Through partnerships with county agencies and community organizations, New Jersey continues to expand services that promote independence and improve quality of life.
At mGAP, we encourage every older adult to spend a few minutes exploring what is available. Even if you don’t need assistance today, knowing these resources exist could help you, a family member, or a neighbor in the future.
