Will Social Security Increase in 2027?

Social Security recipients are expected to receive another cost-of-living adjustment in 2027.

Current estimates place the increase between 3.4% and 3.6%. For someone receiving $2,000 per month, a 3.5% increase would add about $70 per month, or $840 over the year.

The estimate is not official yet. Social Security calculates the COLA using inflation data from July, August, and September. The Social Security Administration will announce the final percentage on October 14, 2026. The higher payments will begin in January 2027.

The purpose of the COLA is to help benefits keep pace with higher prices. Food, housing, utilities, transportation, and healthcare expenses all affect a retiree’s monthly budget.

Recipients should also watch for the 2027 Medicare Part B premium. Social Security usually deducts this premium directly from monthly benefits. If the Medicare premium rises, it will reduce part of the COLA increase.

Your personal COLA notice should appear in your online “my Social Security” account later this year. It will show your exact benefit amount for 2027.

The news appears positive. Social Security checks should rise in January, but the final increase will remain unknown until the October announcement.
